History
There’s a reason the Toyota FJ40 is one of the most recognizable 4x4s of all time, more than 1 million were sold over a production run spanning nearly a quarter century. Of course, this success was driven by the FJ40’s well-earned reputation for unstoppable off-road abilities, a reputation that Toyota has honed since by continuing to build trucks that are known the world over for seeming to run forever.
So, when Toyota revived the FJ40 in the form of the FJ Cruiser, they did what they do best – build a serious four-wheeler. Sharing a platform with the 4Runner, this body-on-frame SUV was developed in the wilds of Moab and the Rubicon Trail. Produced between 2007 and 2014, the FJ Cruiser boasts nearly 10” of ground clearance and enviable angles of approach, breakover, and departure.
Sitting atop the beefy running gear is an upright, boxy design that pulls in the lozenge-shaped grille with integrated headlights and TOYOTA lettering straight from 1960. An ideal application of retro styling, the modern FJ Cruiser has the burly looks you’d expect of such a dedicated trail truck.
Produced in limited quantities over a seven-year production run, the Trail Teams Special Edition came in one distinct color for each model year that was unavailable on the rest of the FJ lineup. Along with a host of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades, this Trail Teams setup gives the FJ even more presence as evidenced by today’s example.
