History
Just before the new millennium, Honda brought their 1960s era of S roadsters back to life as the S2000. Continuing with the S500, S600 and S800 naming tradition, the S2000 was named for its 2.0 liters of engine displacement. This 240-horsepower inline-4 was a technological marvel with a specific power output of 120 hp/liter. At the time, Honda noted this was the highest output of any naturally aspirated engine. Then there was that screaming redline, besting the likes of Ferrari’s 360 Modena that wound up to 8,500 rpms.
AP1, the first generation, S2000s were a critical hit during their five-year production run. Car and Driver named it to their 10 Best List in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004, while Top Gear ranked it #1 in their annual survey three times between 2003 and 2006. In 2002, a refresh of the AP1 generation brought a rear glass window with defrost, revised suspension settings and an upgraded stereo. The example on sale here includes all those improvements along with the Suzuka Blue Metallic paint job, new that year.
