History
BMW’s second-gen 3 Series, known internally as the E30, has earned acclaim the world over for its wonderfully boxy design and second-to-none driver engagement. Though the M3 variant owns the E30 spotlight, there was another, lesser-known model, that gets North American gearheads particularly amped up.
That would be the Touring model, otherwise known as a station wagon. The story goes that BMW engineer Max Reisböck created a wagon out of a period 323i in a friend’s garage. Though never in the official R&D pipeline, once the brass laid eyes on this creation, they set to work building them in the factory.
Unfortunately, we never saw these classic wagons over here and so they remain a rarity. Add in the Design Edition spec on today’s 1993 316i wagon and you have a true unicorn. Largely original and running strong, this E30 Touring is not to be missed.
