Classic Hatchback
Finished in red, this 1997 Honda Civic 2-door hatchback is said to be 100% original aside from the aftermarket fog lamps. Per the owner, the body is solid with no rust present and a history of bodywork. Based on the overspray noted in the gallery, it appears to have received a repaint along the way.
It retains the US-spec impact bumpers on both ends with rubber overriders and inserts that, as period literature notes, were intended to prevent scrapes and dents on the chrome-plated surfaces.
The black-finished 12” steel wheels sport chrome Honda center caps and are wrapped in Federal Super Steel 657 tires. They are sized 155/80 all around and show 2020 date codes.
Features include a vented hood, dual chrome side mirrors, a single exhaust outlet, dual reverse lights, and a flip-open tailgate with seals that look ready for replacement. Factory badging denoting the CVCC engine and HONDAMATIC transmission are retained, though the driver-side fender emblem is missing.
An interesting historical note is that Honda highlights the locking fuel filler door in period literature as a theft deterrent during a time of “ever-increasing cost of fuel.”
Vintage Vibes
Inside, the seats are upholstered in black vinyl with cloth inserts and show tears on the front buckets. The color extends to the door cards, with manual window cranks and sliding locks, and a clean dashboard with woodgrain trim.
The thin-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel features horn buttons on all spokes and a Honda horn button. It frames a combination gauge for fuel level and engine coolant temperature, a center column of indicator lights, and a Nippon Seiki 100-mph speedometer with an inset odometer reading 60,238 miles.
Original switchgear is retained as is the push-button Hitachi stereo and controls for the heat and defrost. Black carpeting and red Honda-branded floor mats are fitted and surround the floor-mounted two-speed Hondamatic shifter.
Other features include a glove box, pop-open rear windows, roll-up cargo cover, and fold-down rear bench. Clean, uncluttered, and analog, the cabin on this 1977 Civic has all the vintage vibes.
Trick CVCC Powertrain
This carbureted CVCC motor featured a unique head design to promote more efficient combustion and made 53 horsepower when new. The original powertrain, mounted up front, is retained, highlighted by the 1,488 cc ED3 SOHC inline-four. It sends power to the front wheels via the two-speed Hondamatic transmission.
The owner notes he has fully sorted out the mechanicals on this 1977 Civic so that it runs and shifts smoothly with no known issues. The tidy engine bay is thoroughly documented in the gallery and shows the original build plate with the chassis numbers matching those on the dashboard.
Simple Throwback Fun
Located in Vallejo, California, this 1977 Honda Civic CVCC has been under current ownership for approximately four years, during which 1,000 of the original 60,241 miles have been added.
The prior owner intended to restore this vintage Civic but was unable to find the time. Fortunately, the current owner was able to take on the project and put together the strong-running sorted Civic you see today.
Featuring relatively low mileage and effectively all-original, this 1977 Honda Civic with the CVCC motor is a precious piece of Japanese automotive history.
