1969/70 was the unquestioned zenith of the original musclecar era. Engines were the biggest, compression ratios were the highest, bodystyles and graphics the most audacious, and horsepower was king. Mustang got an exciting all new body style for 1969, and new models called Boss and Mach I. The Bosses were designed to homologate engines and performance packages for racing, and the Mach I replaced previous GT models. The 1968 ½ Mustang 428 Cobra Jet model set the stage for the top dog ’69 Mach 1. And options were everything; the way to fly was the biggest engine, a 4-speed manual transmission, and a dazzling pop art driven color combination, plus all the other go fast and look great goodies. These are the musclecars most highly sought after by today’s informed enthusiast collectors.
History
The car on offer here combines a tantalizing combination of colors, options, equipment, rarity and performance. The R-Code 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine option was somewhat laughably rated at 335 horsepower in an attempt to keep the insurance companies fooled – the truth was much closer to 400 ponies. The tranny of choice is the Ford “Top-Loader” 4-speed manual with Hurst shifter – in the case of this Mach 1, topped by a bold Hurst T-handle. This highly optioned car is the benefactor of a high quality, comprehensive restoration focused on preserving its authenticity and originality. Colors are excellent, with the Mach 1 looking great factory correct Candy Apple Red paint, then and ranking today among the most popular Mustang paint color choices. Documentation includes copies of the original window sticker and an Elite Marti Report showing all relevant original build information; these documents evidence this example to be somewhat of a unicorn, in that only three 1969 Mustangs were built with this exact group of options and colors.
This highly optioned Mustang appears as if it just rolled off of a Ford showroom floor in 1969; all of the equipment is factory correct (notwithstanding the three items otherwise noted below), as are the paint and finishes; the functional Ram Air “shaker” hood scoop, rear window slats, lower front spoiler, deck mounted rear wing, and chrome Magnum 500 wheels. All of the surfaces are shiny and clean, with tight body lines and gaps; the black finished hood and trim are correct as built.
High-End Mach 1 Interior
The Mach 1 Black Clarion Knit/vinyl upholstery looks great, particularly in contrast with the factory wood grain trim panels on doors and dash. Naturally, this Mach 1 has full instrumentation, including a clock in the passenger side dash panel. This car’s features include full tinted glass, an AM radio and the optional 8-track tape deck; note the Cobra badge on the center console. The original “rim-blow” steering wheel is included, however not currently installed, as the horn mechanism requires replacement/restoration.
R-Code 428 CJ Power and Performance
Every effort has been made to keep the powertrain looking and running as originally built; the factory transmission is a close ratio 4-speed model, with the rear end being the factory Ford 9-inch unit with 3.50:1 Traction Lok differential. The only non-factory mechanical upgrades are the current installation of KYB gas shock absorbers and Flowmaster mufflers; as to the current owner’s taste, however, both can be easily refitted with factory original or reproduction units as desired. The Mustang sounds awesome with a throaty, menacing exhaust note from the legendary R-Code Ram Air 428 Cobra Jet powerplant.
A Prime-Quality Musclecar to Collect and Enjoy
The consignor includes a variety of high-quality photos, plus the aforementioned window sticker, Marti Report, and the original Rim-Blow steering wheel.
This highly equipped Mach I has been faithfully restored to factory correct appearance and specification, in high quality condition in desirable colors with all the important options. Returning it to 100% factory stock would require no more than restoring and swapping out the steering wheel, and replacing the shock absorbers, and exhaust system. It’s a fast, great looking car that will be a joy to drive, and sure to draw admiring attention at shows and events. With its choice options and extreme rarity, it will serve as the crown jewel of any proper musclecar or Ford collection.

The car is valued at $60,000 +++ US$ and the current bid is likely not close to the Reserve Bid! Get serious if you wish to end auction. This site is no BS. Who would give away a beauty under market value and find it 4sale elsewhere a moment later? Bid $61,000 and the car maybe yours. Its an auction not a blow out sale.
Just to confirm, this is an original sportsroof/fastback but NOT an actual Mach 1? I didn’t know they offered the 428 in the standard sportsroof… does the engine and tranny match the chassis number?
